Amelia: A Story of Belonging
Being a single parent can be one of the most difficult jobs in the world, and raising children alone can make single moms and dads feel alone and unsupported.
In New York, the number of single-parent households are on the rise, households like Amelia’s.
Amelia raised her daughter in New York City until her daughter moved across the country for school, leaving Amelia all alone. Over time, Amelia’s fears of what life without her daughter around would look like began to creep in, and she further isolated herself. She even left the community she lived in to try and make a new start in Chelsea, but she couldn’t get away from her fears. “I don’t know anybody, what if something happens to me?” she questioned.
Amelia continued to struggle with this fear and loneliness until 2016 when she meet the students of the Dream Center Leadership Program at an Adopt-A-Block event. She immediately felt the love and generosity the students had for her community and wanted to be a part of what they were doing. She decided to attended Dream Center Church, but because of prior church experiences she was afraid that she wouldn’t receive the same welcoming love she experienced at Adopt-A-Block.
That week, Amelia attended church with a deep hope, “All I wanted to know is that Jesus is standing right there, and that God is not abandoning me.” As service went on Amelia felt accepted right where she was. The feeling of loneliness began to melt off.
Now, Amelia is a stranger to no one. Meeting people wherever she goes, she is able to show others the same love that she was shown by the Dream Center students.
Amelia is changing the community around her.
