Colossians 3:1-4

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”

Disordered Love

This verse seems fairly straight forward. The instructions are simple enough. God should be the #1 desire in our lives. He should sit in the highest place of worship in our hearts. Unfortunately because of our human nature we want something we can see and physically touch to comfort us. This causes is us to have disordered loves and worship the wrong thing. We value a person or a job over a relationship with God. We tell ourselves if I can only get this one thing or get to this place then I will be truly happy. The truth is when we follow Colossians 3 and hide our lives in Christ and set our eyes on things above we will be truly satisfied.

Before this fast started I didn't think my loves were disordered that badly. It was only until I tried to give up things that I enjoy daily that I realized how disordered my heart truly was. I had my eyes at earth level not on the glory of God. This time of fasting and praying has showed me what I have valued higher than God. Don't hear me wrong, these things aren't always evil or bad things. When you place them above God is when they become a problem.

Luke 11:25-26 says, “When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.”

This scripture tells us that it is of no use to just remove the idol from the highest spot in your heart because it will just return stronger. The key is to remove the idol and fill the space with God.

Ask yourself, Have my loves become disordered? What do I worship more than God?

Dear God, I recognize that my loves have become disordered and I am worshipping other things before you. Please show me what I have in the place that you desire in my heart. Please come and fill that place. I invite you into my heart to illuminate the areas that I need to change. Amen
